Cables were the first “intermediate” skill that I really learned. The Hourglass beanie features a fun cable work design that keep the project interesting and hard to put down.
This project is perfect for the adventurous beginner who is ready to take on some new skills. And it is also great for intermediate and advanced knitters who need a quick project.
It is completed seamlessly from the bottom up on circular needles. Since it is worked in the round, only the right side is worked, making it easier to keep track of cables.
I used the classic Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick. This super bulky weight yarn works up amazingly well and makes the coziest beanie.
It is a wool blend which means it has the warmth and softness of wool, but is easy to care for.
And I absolutely love this color. I mean, who doesn’t love mustard! I need everything in mustard.

Hourglass Beanie
This beanie is a quick and fun knit. The cable design keeps the project interesting and the bulky yarn makes the beanie fly off the needles. Worked on circular needles, it requires little finishing at the end. Just weave in the ends at the beginning & end and you’re set to go!
Materials:
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick (#6 Super Bulky
Weight; 80% Acrylic/20% Wool; 6 oz/170g, 106 yards/97m).
1 skein used, Mustard.
❖ US 10.5 (6.5mm) 16” circular needles
❖ US 13 (9mm) 16” circular needles
❖ US 13 (9mm) double pointed needles
❖ Stitch marker
❖ Darning Needle
Finished Size:
18” x 8.5”
Gauge:
9 sts x 12 rows = 4” with US 13 (9mm) in cable pattern, blocked.

Pattern Notes:
The beanie is worked from the bottom-up.
It is worked in the round with circular needles.
At the decrease portion, you can switch to double pointed needles as needed, or use the magic loop method for small circumference knitting.
The beanie is worked in one piece.

LS slip 1 stitch onto CN and hold to front. Purl 1 stitch then knit stitch from CN.
PM place marker

p2tog purl 2 stitches together
RS slip 1 stitch onto CN and hold to back. Knit 1 stitch then purl stitch from CN.
sl1 slip 1 stitches purlwise
sl2 slip 2 stitches purlwise
Pattern Instructions
Set-up: With smaller needles & long-tailed cast on, CO 48 sts. PM and join round, being sure stitches aren’t twisted.
Ribbing: [k1, p1].
Work ribbing for 7 rounds total.

Switch to bigger needles.

R2: [p2, sl 2, p2].
R3: Repeat R1.
R4: Repeat R2.
R5: [p1, RS, LS, p1].

Finishing
Cut yarn with 8-10″ tail. With darning needle, take the tail through the remaining 8 sts and pull to close. Weave in the ends, block and it’s ready to wear!
